Chapter Programs

Alpha Kappa Alpha’s purpose is multi-faceted and yet
simple. At
its core, our mission is to study and help alleviate
problems concerning girls and women in order to improve
their social stature and to be of service to all
mankind.
Alpha Kappa Alpha’s international program theme for 2010
– 2014, “Global Leadership Through Timeless Service,”
defines our strategic direction toward meeting the needs
of others, locally and globally.
Rho Psi Omega’s programs align with
the specific initiatives of our international program
platform as outlined below.
Emerging Young Leaders (EYL) ==
MLK Middle School
This international signature program is designed to
impact 6th – 8th grade girls by
providing leadership development, civic engagement,
enhanced academic preparation and character building.
Rho Psi Omega empowers approximately 25 female students
at Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School by conducting
monthly workshops on topics that are critical to their
development as future leaders.
MLK is located near North Tryon Street and
Eastway Drive, in the urban and culturally diverse
University area of Charlotte.
Health ==
Public Health Fair; Benefit
Walks
This international initiative encourages personal
fitness and healthy lifestyles, supports organizations
that advance access to treatment, coordinates awareness
and advocacy campaigns to reduce health disparities, and
seeks to impact health-related legislation.
-
Public Health Fair
Rho Psi Omega plans to host a Public Health Fair in September 2012 which will provide access to tangible services such as high blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol checks, mammograms, eye exams, etc., as well as provide literature and informational workshops. -
Benefit Walks
Rho Psi Omega will participate in two walk/runs that will benefit health-related charities and raise awareness of health conditions that disproportionately affect African Americans. Our goal is to raise at least $1,908 for each walk, while also promoting personal fitness and sisterly interaction.
Global Poverty == Second Harvest Food Bank
The goals of this international initiative are to
end hunger, preserve the environment and empower women.
Rho Psi Omega partners with Second Harvest Food
Bank of Metrolina to provide volunteer labor to sort
food donations.
SHFBM strives through education, advocacy, and
partnerships to eliminate hunger by solicitation and
distribution of food for 14 counties in North Carolina
and 5 counties in South Carolina.
Economic Security
== Business Expo
This international initiative focuses on wealth
building and allocation of resources, home ownership,
estate planning, and support and empowerment of
female-owned businesses and urban enterprise zones.
Rho Psi Omega plans to host a Minority Business Expo in
August 2013.
The Expo will feature minority-owned vendors, speakers,
entertainment, and door prizes.
Social Justice and Human Rights ==
Florence Crittenton
This international initiative addresses gender
equality issues such as domestic violence, services for
children with incarcerated parents, youth aging out of
foster care, and parents as advocates for educational
and healthcare needs.
Rho Psi Omega empowers approximately 25 women at
Florence Crittenton who are
aging out of foster care.
Since its establishment in 1903, Florence
Crittenton has served nearly 39,000 young mothers and
their babies by providing medical/prenatal care, social
services, education and career services, and adoption
and parenting support services. Rho Psi Omega hosts
monthly workshops on topics that are critical to the
ladies’ transition to independent living, such as career
building, budgeting, nutrition and fitness, sexually
transmitted diseases, and domestic violence.
Internal
Leadership for External Service ==
Training Workshops
This initiative focuses on leadership training for
members of Alpha Kappa Alpha and serves as a catalyst
for members to reach their fullest potential as skilled
leaders in service to AKA, as well as other
organizations and institutions.
Our goal is to identify a leadership skill of major
interest to Rho Psi Omega sorors and conduct in depth
workshops on that singular topic throughout the year.
